Baby Swimming Lessons: When to Start & What to Expect
Baby Swimming Lessons: Building Water Confidence from an Early Age Living in New Zealand means water is never far away! We've got beaches, we've got lakes and we've got rivers, not to mention our swimming pools and backyard water play. Learning how to feel confident and safe around water is an important life skill for our Kiwi kids. Introducing your little one to the water from an early age can be a lovely experience for the whole family. Swimming lessons can support coordination, movement and confidence, while also giving parents and caregivers a special opportunity to have fun, connect and learn together. Most importantly, early positive experiences around water can help lay the foundations for lifelong water safety. Water Safety New Zealand says drowning remains a leading cause of death for New Zealand children aged under five, making active supervision and age appropriate water skills incredibly important. Start with water confidence Your baby's first introduction to water doesn't need to happen at a swimming pool. Bath time is a great place to start. Allow your baby to enjoy splashing, kicking and gradually becoming familiar with water around their face and body. As they become more comfortable, trips to the local pool can introduce them to a completely different environment with new sounds, sensations and movements plus a whole lot of fun! The aim at this stage isn't to turn your baby into a swimmer. It's simply about helping them feel happy and secure around water. When can babies start swimming lessons? There isn't one set age that suits every baby or every swimming programme. Some specialist swim schools offer parent and baby classes from around three months, while others begin from six months. The best option is to check the starting age and requirements of your chosen swim school. Finding swimming lessons in New Zealand If you're looking for somewhere to start, there are plenty of great options. Dean Greenwood Swim School has several Auckland locations and offers programmes ranging from babies through to adults. Hilton Brown Swimming offers lessons for babies, children, teenagers and adults across locations in Auckland, Waikato, Hawke's Bay and Manawatū. Their infant programme focuses on water confidence, movement, safety awareness and introducing skills such as floating. Many local leisure centres and community swimming pools also offer learn-to-swim programmes for babies, preschoolers, school aged children and even adults, so it's totally worth checking what is available close to home. What happens at baby swimming lessons? Baby swimming lessons are usually much more about water familiarisation and confidence than traditional swimming. A parent or caregiver will generally get into the pool too, helping baby feel secure while the instructor introduces activities through play, songs and movement. Depending on your baby's age and the programme, lessons may gradually introduce skills such as: Becoming comfortable with water around the face and head Kicking and moving through the water Floating and rolling Breath control and gentle submersion Moving towards or returning to a safe position Learning to feel calm and confident in the pool It's also valuable learning for parents. You'll become more confident handling your baby in the water and learn ways to continue practising positive water experiences together. And remember - swimming lessons build skills and confidence, but they never replace active adult supervision around water. Tips for making swimming lessons easier Give yourself plenty of time Getting yourself and a baby changed can sometimes take longer than the swimming lesson itself! Arrive early enough that you don't need to rush. Family changing rooms are especially helpful, and if your pool allows strollers inside, having somewhere safe for baby to sit while you get changed can make things much easier. Pack for afterwards Swimming can be tiring, particularly for little ones. Have everything ready for a feed or snack afterwards depending on your baby's age. Keep them warm Moving from a warm swimming pool into a cooler changing room or outside air can feel like a big temperature change. Have a cosy towel and dry clothing ready so you can get your little one comfortable quickly. Bring another pair of hands If you're taking more than one child to lessons, another adult can make changing, feeding and getting everyone safely to and from the pool considerably easier. It can totally be done with one caregiver if you're game... but four hands are easier than two. Don't worry if every lesson isn't perfect Some days your baby might love the pool. Other days they may be tired, hungry or simply not interested. That's completely normal. Building water confidence is a gradual process, so keep the experience positive rather than trying to push through when they've had enough. What to pack for baby swimming lessons A little preparation makes getting in and out of the pool much easier. Baby swimwear Start with comfortable baby swimwear and swimming essentials suitable for your little one's age and the type of swimming you'll be doing. Our new Baby Swimwear Collection brings together the swim essentials you need for trips to the pool, beach and summer days by the water. Shop our full range of Baby Swim Essentials here Swim nappies Most pools require babies who aren't toilet trained to wear an appropriate swim nappy, so check your swim school's requirements before your first lesson. A warm towel A soft towel or hooded towel is ideal for wrapping baby up as soon as they leave the water. A change mat Pool changing rooms aren't always the easiest place to change a baby, so having your own change mat can be incredibly useful. The Purely Baby Disposable Change Mats are particularly handy for swimming lessons because you can create a clean changing surface and simply dispose of the mat afterwards. Don't forget Pack a few extra essentials too: Dry clothes Spare nappies Wipes A wet bag or waterproof bag for wet swimwear Milk, a bottle or snacks depending on baby's age Your own swimwear and towel - surprisingly easy to forget! Water safety always comes first Swimming lessons are valuable, but no swimming lesson or floatation device can replace close adult supervision. Water Safety New Zealand recommends keeping babies and young children within arm's reach whenever they're in or around water. This applies everywhere - the swimming pool, beach, bath, paddling pool, lake or river. Stay focused on your child rather than relying on lifeguards, older siblings or floatation toys to supervise them. It's also important to look for potential water hazards around your own home. In New Zealand, residential pools that can hold water to a depth of 400 mm or more are subject to requirements for physical barriers designed to prevent unsupervised access by children under five. Enjoy the water together Learning to swim is a journey, and it begins long before your child is swimming independently. Positive bath times, trips to the pool and regular swimming lessons can all help your little one develop confidence and respect for the water while creating plenty of special memories along the way. Keep it fun, follow their pace and, above all, stay close whenever water is around.

Learn moreWelcome to Fatherhood: New Dads and Dads-to-Be
Congratulations, Dad First off, huge congratulations! You’re about to embark on one of the most rewarding journeys of your life. Whether you’re a first-time dad or this is round two (or three!), there’s no denying how incredible this experience will be. Sure, it might come with a few sleepless nights and some unknowns along the way, but trust us – it’s going to be amazing.Fatherhood isn’t about being perfect – it’s about being there, learning as you go, and embracing every moment, big or small. You’ll have days filled with firsts, plenty of laughter, and some truly special memories. And remember, it’s okay if you don’t have everything figured out – you’re not alone on this journey. We’ve put together some helpful tips and advice to support you as you navigate these early days, so you can feel confident and prepared. The road ahead is exciting, and you’re going to be a wonderful dad. Let’s get started – you’ve got this! Support During The Pregnancy Journey Pregnancy brings plenty of changes – not just for mums, but for you, too. You might not be the one carrying the baby, but your support can make a huge difference. Here’s how to be the kind of partner your family will thank you for later. Start by learning and getting involved Understanding pregnancy helps you feel more confident and prepared. Check out a few articles, read a few books or dive into an online course for new dads. It can also be incredibly helpful to attend check-ups, which will keep you connected and informed. Ask questions, take in the details, and get to know your baby’s journey. Pick up a few extra chores As the bump grows, so does the to-do list. Take on more housework, drive to appointments, and let your partner rest. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – teamwork makes it easier. Get involved with meals Food might be a bit of a rollercoaster during pregnancy, so try to help where you can – cooking, meal planning, or just making sure there’s something in the fridge that actually sounds good today. And if your partner suddenly needs a very specific brand of ice cream at 9pm… well, that’s your time to shine. Be steady during the ups and downs Hormones can make emotions more intense. Be patient, listen well, and remember: sometimes just being there is enough. Look after your own wellbeing It’s easy to put your own needs on the backburner, but your mental health matters too. Talk openly with your partner, ask lots of questions, and check in with how you’re feeling. A calm, supported dad makes a big difference to the whole family. Think ahead Before baby arrives, research and get organised: Choose and install the car seat (Dimples can help with installation and advice) Set up baby’s space (even if they start in your room). Stock up on nappies, wipes, swaddles, and clothes. Merino is the ultimate in newborn clothing. Learn more about this here Cook and freeze a few meals – thank yourself later! And remember, you don’t need to have it all figured out. Just show up, learn as you go, and be there when it counts. You’ve got this – and feel free to sneak in a dad joke or two (just maybe not at 3am). Now... Baby Has Arrived! Bonding with Your Newborn Studies show that active involvement from dads helps with emotional development, cognitive skills, and even reduces stress for both baby and parents. Bonding early on lays the foundation for a strong relationship as your little one grows. Here are a few ways to bond: Skin-to-skin contact: Take a moment to strip down and let your baby lie on your chest. This helps regulate their body temperature and heartbeat, while also releasing oxytocin, the "love hormone," for both of you. Talk and sing: Babies love hearing your voice. Even if you're off-key, read books, sing, or narrate your day ("Time for the big diaper change!"). Your voice will comfort them. Wear your baby: A baby carrier is an easy way to keep your newborn close while you move around. The warmth and motion strengthen your bond, and it gives you some extra dad points. We love this one by Nuna - we stock a few different kinds of carrier. Our store can help you with this if you want to pop in. Support Mum’s Healing The first weeks after birth can be tough for mum. Give her space to heal, and take charge of housework and meal prep. Whether it’s cleaning up, tidying, or letting her nap, your support will help her adjust and feel cared for. Taking Care of Yourself Parenting is a team effort, so don't forget to take care of yourself. Get rest when you can, eat well, and ask for help if you need it. You’ll be much more equipped to care for your little one if you're taking care of your own well-being. Finding Your Routine In the early days, life with a newborn can feel chaotic. Establishing a simple routine will help everyone feel more secure. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but having a basic rhythm for naps, feedings, and bedtime makes things easier as you go. Trusting Your Instincts You might not have all the answers, but trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. You’ll figure it out along the way – you’re learning every day, and that’s enough. Accepting Help There’s no need to do everything yourself. Accept help when it’s offered – whether it’s a meal from a friend or a family member taking over a diaper change. It’ll make this journey smoother for everyone. Connecting with Each other And Celebrating the Small Wins Parenting is full of big milestones, but it’s the little victories that count too. Celebrate your baby’s first smile, a good night’s sleep, or the first successful outing. These moments are worth appreciating. Parenthood can be all-consuming, but it’s really important to find time for your relationship with your partner. Even simple moments, like enjoying a coffee together, can help you stay connected and grounded amidst the chaos. A Few More Tips Swaddle like a pro: Swaddling can help soothe your baby and improve their sleep. Merino or cotton is the best option. See our range Here Change bag: Keep a change bag handy: Have nappies, wipes, and a spare outfit packed and ready – you never know when you'll need them. Here are a few options for change bags at Dimples. And most importantly: Have fun! Parenting is a learning experience, so embrace it – and don’t forget to build your dad-joke repertoire! Fatherhood is an incredible journey – full of joy, challenges, and unforgettable moments. Dimples is here to support you every step of the way with all the essentials you need to be the best dad you can be. Enjoy every moment, because these early days will fly by ❤️
Learn moreWhy Buy New Zealand Made Clothes?
From garments more well-travelled than most of us to clothing produced in factories not quite up to scratch – the backstory of what we buy has become an increasingly hot topic. Keeping shopping habits local is an easy way to not only do your bit for the environment but also support the New Zealand economy and the people who live here. Better still, buying New Zealand-made no longer means compromising on quality or choice – in fact, it’s typically quite the opposite! Do it for the birds and the bees (literally) The environmental impact of clothing sourced overseas is huge. Buying local often means reducing ecologically unfriendly packaging, and will certainly cut out vast amounts of fossil fuels in transport. Clothing made in New Zealand also complies with strict guidelines, which is a big win for the environment in an industry that is notoriously hard on the planet – no pesticide and fabric-dye-filled runoff contaminating water supplies here thanks! Feelgood tip – swap those well-travelled goods with locally-made merchandise. Fast fashion or future-friendly? The days of patching worn jeans and sewing up holes in socks are long gone – popping to the shops for a wallet-friendly replacement is just too easy. But with prices so low, something’s got to give – whether it’s the quality of raw materials, worker conditions, or the standard of the finished product. This fast-fashion movement ironically has you popping to the shops for replacements a whole lot more often! All this disposable fashion also becomes a major landfill problem. Synthetic fabrics are much cheaper to produce (they make up about 60% of a typical closet) and can go on to live hundreds of years after parting ways with your wardrobe. On the flip side, buying New Zealand-made means these items live up to local production standards, and are far more likely to survive playground adventures and multiple trips through the washing machine. They might even look good enough to pass on to family or friends once you’re done with them – recycling at its best! Feelgood tip – invest in quality, locally made items that can be passed on. Guilt and hassle-free shopping Shop-a-holics rejoice! If you’re buying locally produced goods, pat yourself on the back for your contribution to the local economy. You’re supporting fair, local employment and helping to keep New Zealand businesses alive and able to compete with the big guys. Shop-a-holics rejoice some more! If you’re buying locally produced goods and have accidentally bought the wrong size for your little one, it’s as easy as popping into a store or a local phone call to fix your problem. Local businesses are usually happy to help (as each customer is important) whereas it’s likely you’re literally one in a million for big global companies. Even finding contact details can be a challenge! Feelgood tip – shopping local simply supports New Zealanders. Dimples' does it differently No compromises here, just adorable, high-quality clothing, using high-quality raw materials, produced by fairly treated Kiwi workers! Our commitment to the environment hasn’t changed as the business has evolved and grown, and neither has our commitment to our workers. All Dimples clothing is made here in New Zealand from locally sourced merino (or from our neighbouring Australian sheep) and pure organic certified cotton (to ensure the impact of cotton farming is minimal). We don’t have a huge factory producing our clothing – instead, our expert sewers work from their homes. It’s essentially a scaled-up version of the small home workshop where it all started. The end result is hard-wearing, long-lasting clothing – that stays looking super cute for longer. Feelgood tip – buy New Zealand made.
