How to Store a Car Seat Between Children
As parents, we often find ourselves marvelling at how quickly our little ones grow. One day, they're nestled securely in their capsule and before we know it, they're moving on to a convertible car seat. If you're planning to store a capsule for a future sibling, you’ll want to ensure it remains in excellent condition, ready to protect your next bub. One of the main concerns during storage is preventing mould, which can be harmful to your baby's health and damaging to the car seat. Also, be aware that car seats do have an expiration date. Check this before packing the seat away. Here are some storage tips to help keep a capsule clean and mould-free: 1. First Step - Clean Thoroughly Before you even think about storing the car seat, it’s crucial to clean it thoroughly. Mould thrives in dirty, damp environments, so you want to ensure the seat is as clean as possible. Remove Fabric Covers : Start by removing any fabric covers, cushions, and padding that can be taken off. Many of these can be machine-washed. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your seat. Wipe Down You can spot-clean your harness and straps with warm water and a non-abrasive cloth (ensure you follow your instruction manual for advice as some manufacturers allow the use of soapy warm water). Vacuum Pay close attention to crevices that can accumulate crumbs, sand and dirt. Dry Completely : After washing, make sure that every part of the seat is completely dry before storage. Leaving any moisture behind is an invitation for mould growth. Some drying time in the sun is great as ultraviolet light is a natural disinfectant. Read More about cleaning a car seat here. 2. Choose the Right Storage Environment Where you store the car seat is as important as how you clean it. Cool, Dry Place : The storage area should be cool and dry. Avoid basements, garages, or attics if they’re prone to humidity, which can encourage mould growth. A closet or spare room inside your home, where temperatures are more regulated, is ideal. Elevated Position : Store the car seat off the ground to avoid potential contact with dampness. Packaging : Seal the seat in a plastic bag and then in a cardboard box for protective storage. If you’ve kept the original box the seat came in, that’s ideal. Ensure you have all the pieces together including the manual, any infant inserts and even the car seat adapters for your stroller. However you may want to store the fabric covers separately in the linen cupboard if you have one. 3. Check Periodically It’s a good idea to regularly check on the car seat during storage to make sure there’s no exposure to damp or pests. 4. Pre-Use Inspection Before you use the car seat for your next child, inspect it thoroughly. Check for any signs of damage, mould, or mildew. Give it another clean if necessary, and ensure that all components are still in good working order. Final Thoughts Storing a capsule car seat between children can save you money and reduce waste, but it requires careful cleaning and storage to keep it in top condition. Don’t forget to get it out of storage and do that pre-use check nice and early so you have everything sorted well before the new bub arrives.

Learn moreStroller Buying Guide: How to pick the right ride for Your Family
Why Choosing the Right Stroller Matters: Essential Tips for New Parents When you have a baby or toddler, a good stroller is essential. It lets you get out of the house and navigate the world with ease. Leaving the house with a newborn can be tricky, so a high-quality, easy-to-use stroller is a lifeline for many new parents. Your stroller is also one of the most expensive baby purchases you’ll make, so it’s important to get it right. You don’t want to invest in a stroller that ends up being too heavy, hard to fold, or difficult to steer. Of course, no one stroller suits every parent. Consider your lifestyle. Will you be navigating bush walks and country paths or be more likely to keep to the footpaths and malls? Before you buy, it’s a good idea to take a look at different models in-store, push them around, fold them down, and open them up to get a feel for how they work. Before you’re overwhelmed by options and terminology - In New Zealand, we tend to use the words pram, stroller, buggy and pushchair interchangeably. Capsule compatibility For new babies, you’ll most likely want a stroller that’s compatible with your capsule car seat. These are particularly handy during the sleepy newborn phase, as they let you move the baby from car to stroller without waking them. Our strollers are compatible with most capsules from well-known brands, such as Maxi Cosi and Nuna. Talk to our in-store team if you want to check on compatibility. Carrycot – or not A detachable carrycot can be incredibly handy in the early stages – from newborn to around 6 months. Lying flat on their back is the best, safest position for newborn baby to be in. If the seat on the stroller you choose has a lie-flat position, a carrycot isn’t essential. But many parents choose them because they simplify life in the first few months. A carrycot attached to your stroller not only allows your baby to sleep comfortably while on the go, it can also be removed and used as a portable bed for a bit of supervised sleep when visiting friends and family. Single vs. Double Strollers: Which is Right for Your Family? When you buy a stroller for your first baby, it can be hard to imagine life with more children. But it’s a good idea to consider your future when making your decision. Some strollers – like the Nuna Demi Next and the Edwards and Co Olive – have the option to add an extra seat for a sibling. If you plan to have two children close in age, this is worth considering. Having twins? Both the Demi next and Olive are tandem strollers, where the seats are not side-by-side but instead tiered. This is more convenient for everyday errands and shopping, as they’re narrower and easier to manage. Another option to consider for an older sibling is a Stroller board that attaches to the back of the stroller. These are great for independent walkers who might tire on a long walk or need a ride to quicken the pace. The right size for your space Strollers come in a range of shapes and sizes. They’re all foldable, but some – like the lightweight Stokke Yoyo – have a more compact fold than others. It even fits in an aeroplane’s overhead locker making it ideal for travel. Travel can be considered a separate stroller category all together – we’ll do a separate blog on those soon. But even for your everyday stroller, you’ll want to think about storage and transport options. Where will you keep your stroller when you’re at home? How big is the boot of your car? How often will you need to lift it into the car, onto public transport or up stairs? If you can, try the stroller in your boot to see how well it fits. If not, measure the space before you make a decision. How easily the stroller folds is another factor to consider and this is where trying a few models in-store is a good idea. One-hand fold mechanisms are incredibly convenient, especially when your arms are full with a little one. If you think you’ll be lifting your stroller frequently, opt for a lightweight model. Which wheels are best? For a while there, three-wheel strollers seemed to be the only option. Now, four-wheel models are having a resurgence in popularity. Three-wheel strollers are typically thought to be easier to steer, especially with one hand – which can be useful if you’re carrying an upset baby and pushing a pram at the same time. Four-wheel strollers, tend to be more compact, making them easier to manage in shops and cafés. They also tend to fold more neatly for easy storage. Tyre type is another factor to consider - larger wheels with foam-filled or inflatable tyres tend to offer better suspension, which is more comfortable for your baby on rough terrain. Whereas smaller swivelling wheels are easier to manoeuvre around busy places and crowded shops For the best of both worlds, the four-wheeled Mixx has tough, foam filled tyres and boasts easy one-handed steering. The wheels on the New Nuna Swiv offer something unique – with a 360 degree swivel so you can navigate small spaces with side-to-side ease. Forward or back? Forward-facing or rear-facing? If you’ve never bought a stroller before, it can be hard to know what you’ll prefer. Fortunately, this choice is more about preference than safety or practicality. Newborns are naturally drawn to their parent's faces, and a rear-facing stroller lets you interact and keep an eye on them as you go. Then as they grow up, forward-facing gives them a chance to look out on the world around them. Most everyday strollers we sell have convertible parent-facing/world-facing seats so you have both options in one. Other things to consider Comfort features for your little one - like padded seats, adjustable recline positions and good suspension. How comfortable is the handle height? Adjustable handle height can be good for parents of different heights. Does the stroller offer good storage underneath for your baby essentials, nappy bag, and shopping? Fun and functional extras These days, strollers have a huge range of add-ons and accessories – rain and shade covers, parasols, cup holders, snack trays and compatible nappy bags. Choose what’s best for you As with any big purchase, buying a stroller is about working out what’s most important to you, and finding a model that best fits your needs and budget. It’s a magical time, but we know it can also feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. It's hard to know what you'll really need! Here’s the good news: the place you’re giving birth is likely just a short distance away from home. Your partner or family will be able to bring anything you forget, so don’t stress about having everything packed perfectly. A really practical way to prepare is to pack two separate bags – one for labour and postpartum, and one for your baby. When things start moving quickly (as they often do), having your essentials for labour in one place makes it easy to grab and go. Your baby’s bag can stay tucked away until it’s needed later. Learn moreBaby Swimming Lessons
Swimming is a key life skill, especially when you live in NZ - an island nation with a vast coastline, not to mention all the rivers and lakes. Taking your little one to swimming lessons can have many benefits including the physical (coordination, strength, and motor skills). It’s also a bonding opportunity for Mum, Dad or caregiver to have fun interactions with baby and create memories. And of course, there’s the safety benefit. According to Water Safety NZ, one of the leading causes of death for the under-fives in New Zealand is drowning. Introducing your baby to swimming lessons can be a fantastic way to help them develop water safety skills as well as confidence. Start them young Babies spend their first nine months of existence floating in a pool of warm liquid, so reintroducing them to water is something of an instinctive experience. A good first step to developing water confidence in babies is making bath time engaging and enjoyable. If, with lots of positive reinforcement and support, you can get them used to having water trickling over their head and face, that’s a great start. Swimming lessons Once they’re six months old, babies can go to water safety lessons at a public pool By this age Their immune system will have developed enough give them protection from bugs in the pool water They’re better able to cope with the changes in temperature They’ll have the necessary head control to keep their head above water Their ears will be better able to deal with water if it gets in. Baby swimming classes are less about learning to swim and more about water familiarisation and confidence. Over time they’ll start to make progress towards essential water safety skills, including how to float, kick, and hold their breath. Generally with baby swim classes, Mum or Dad (or grandparent or other caregiver) gets in the pool too, joining in to help build bub’s confidence and keeping things fun with interactive play. It’s likely to start with gentle splashing and activities that encourage movement through the water. Tips for swimming lessons Family changing rooms are great and, if there's room, take your stroller. If you get your little one changed, they can then sit in the stroller while you get changed. Swimming will use up lots of energy – make sure you’ve got what you need to re-fuel them afterwards, whether it's a breast or bottle feed, or a snack Changes in temperature can be hard on little ones – make sure you dress them warmly for the trip out to the car in colder weather. If possible, bring along an extra person to help, it can make all the difference especially if you have both a baby and an older child having lessons. What you need Babies will need a swim nappy . These reusable ones offer an adjustable fit from baby to toddler and are machine washable. When choosing swimwear, opt for chlorine-resistant swimsuits for girls and boys that offer 50+ sun protection so they work for the pool or beach A towel Hooded towel or robe can be great for getting them warm and dry quickly A padded change mat is great to have when faced with a damp changing room Dry clothes and spare nappies to keep everyone snug and happy post-swim. Be Safe Always be aware of the dangers for little ones around water – be that the bath, beach or pool. Never leave them unattended. Babies and toddlers should always be within arms’ reach when you’re in or around water - don’t rely on flotation aids like air rings or armbands. Be alert to hazards in your environment. Swimming pools and spas must be fenced to NZ Standards. Consider also ponds, water features and paddling pools that might be a danger to a curious little one.
