Baby Swimming Lessons: When to Start & What to Expect
Baby Swimming Lessons: Building Water Confidence from an Early Age Living in New Zealand means water is never far away! We've got beaches, we've got lakes and we've got rivers, not to mention our swimming pools and backyard water play. Learning how to feel confident and safe around water is an important life skill for our Kiwi kids. Introducing your little one to the water from an early age can be a lovely experience for the whole family. Swimming lessons can support coordination, movement and confidence, while also giving parents and caregivers a special opportunity to have fun, connect and learn together. Most importantly, early positive experiences around water can help lay the foundations for lifelong water safety. Water Safety New Zealand says drowning remains a leading cause of death for New Zealand children aged under five, making active supervision and age appropriate water skills incredibly important. Start with water confidence Your baby's first introduction to water doesn't need to happen at a swimming pool. Bath time is a great place to start. Allow your baby to enjoy splashing, kicking and gradually becoming familiar with water around their face and body. As they become more comfortable, trips to the local pool can introduce them to a completely different environment with new sounds, sensations and movements plus a whole lot of fun! The aim at this stage isn't to turn your baby into a swimmer. It's simply about helping them feel happy and secure around water. When can babies start swimming lessons? There isn't one set age that suits every baby or every swimming programme. Some specialist swim schools offer parent and baby classes from around three months, while others begin from six months. The best option is to check the starting age and requirements of your chosen swim school. Finding swimming lessons in New Zealand If you're looking for somewhere to start, there are plenty of great options. Dean Greenwood Swim School has several Auckland locations and offers programmes ranging from babies through to adults. Hilton Brown Swimming offers lessons for babies, children, teenagers and adults across locations in Auckland, Waikato, Hawke's Bay and Manawatū. Their infant programme focuses on water confidence, movement, safety awareness and introducing skills such as floating. Many local leisure centres and community swimming pools also offer learn-to-swim programmes for babies, preschoolers, school aged children and even adults, so it's totally worth checking what is available close to home. What happens at baby swimming lessons? Baby swimming lessons are usually much more about water familiarisation and confidence than traditional swimming. A parent or caregiver will generally get into the pool too, helping baby feel secure while the instructor introduces activities through play, songs and movement. Depending on your baby's age and the programme, lessons may gradually introduce skills such as: Becoming comfortable with water around the face and head Kicking and moving through the water Floating and rolling Breath control and gentle submersion Moving towards or returning to a safe position Learning to feel calm and confident in the pool It's also valuable learning for parents. You'll become more confident handling your baby in the water and learn ways to continue practising positive water experiences together. And remember - swimming lessons build skills and confidence, but they never replace active adult supervision around water. Tips for making swimming lessons easier Give yourself plenty of time Getting yourself and a baby changed can sometimes take longer than the swimming lesson itself! Arrive early enough that you don't need to rush. Family changing rooms are especially helpful, and if your pool allows strollers inside, having somewhere safe for baby to sit while you get changed can make things much easier. Pack for afterwards Swimming can be tiring, particularly for little ones. Have everything ready for a feed or snack afterwards depending on your baby's age. Keep them warm Moving from a warm swimming pool into a cooler changing room or outside air can feel like a big temperature change. Have a cosy towel and dry clothing ready so you can get your little one comfortable quickly. Bring another pair of hands If you're taking more than one child to lessons, another adult can make changing, feeding and getting everyone safely to and from the pool considerably easier. It can totally be done with one caregiver if you're game... but four hands are easier than two. Don't worry if every lesson isn't perfect Some days your baby might love the pool. Other days they may be tired, hungry or simply not interested. That's completely normal. Building water confidence is a gradual process, so keep the experience positive rather than trying to push through when they've had enough. What to pack for baby swimming lessons A little preparation makes getting in and out of the pool much easier. Baby swimwear Start with comfortable baby swimwear and swimming essentials suitable for your little one's age and the type of swimming you'll be doing. Our new Baby Swimwear Collection brings together the swim essentials you need for trips to the pool, beach and summer days by the water. Shop our full range of Baby Swim Essentials here Swim nappies Most pools require babies who aren't toilet trained to wear an appropriate swim nappy, so check your swim school's requirements before your first lesson. A warm towel A soft towel or hooded towel is ideal for wrapping baby up as soon as they leave the water. A change mat Pool changing rooms aren't always the easiest place to change a baby, so having your own change mat can be incredibly useful. The Purely Baby Disposable Change Mats are particularly handy for swimming lessons because you can create a clean changing surface and simply dispose of the mat afterwards. Don't forget Pack a few extra essentials too: Dry clothes Spare nappies Wipes A wet bag or waterproof bag for wet swimwear Milk, a bottle or snacks depending on baby's age Your own swimwear and towel - surprisingly easy to forget! Water safety always comes first Swimming lessons are valuable, but no swimming lesson or floatation device can replace close adult supervision. Water Safety New Zealand recommends keeping babies and young children within arm's reach whenever they're in or around water. This applies everywhere - the swimming pool, beach, bath, paddling pool, lake or river. Stay focused on your child rather than relying on lifeguards, older siblings or floatation toys to supervise them. It's also important to look for potential water hazards around your own home. In New Zealand, residential pools that can hold water to a depth of 400 mm or more are subject to requirements for physical barriers designed to prevent unsupervised access by children under five. Enjoy the water together Learning to swim is a journey, and it begins long before your child is swimming independently. Positive bath times, trips to the pool and regular swimming lessons can all help your little one develop confidence and respect for the water while creating plenty of special memories along the way. Keep it fun, follow their pace and, above all, stay close whenever water is around.

Always check directly with your airline before flying. You may also be able to use your stroller right up to the gate and have it stored in the hold – ask your airline in advance. Some compact strollers may be accepted as cabin baggage, while others need to be checked or left at the aircraft door. What size stroller fits in an overhead compartment? There isn't one universal size. Many airlines use cabin-bag dimensions around 56 × 45 × 25cm as a general reference, but individual airline rules apply. Can a travel stroller be used as an everyday stroller?Yes. Many modern travel strollers offer features such as reclining seats, good suspension, storage baskets and sun canopies, making them practical for everyday use as well as holidays. And they don't take up too much space in your car boot. However you should consider how much storage and all-terrain capability you need before choosing one as your main stroller. Travel strollers typically have smaller wheels making a slight less smooth ride. Can you use a travel stroller from birth? Some travel strollers are suitable from birth thanks to a lie-flat seat, newborn insert, bassinet or compatible infant capsule. Always check the manufacturer's age, weight and configuration guidelines for the specific stroller.

Choosing the Right Bottle & Teat for Your Baby A Practical Guide to Finding the Right Bottle Feeding Setup We’ve been helping families for many years now, and a question we are always asked by new parents is “Which is the best baby bottle?” - and while we wish there was a one size fits all answer to this question, the reality is that there isn't one perfect bottle for every baby. The best baby bottle is the one that suits your bub's feeding style, comfort, and stage of development, while also fitting your family's routine and preferences. Finding the right bottles and teats can sometimes feel overwhelming. With so many options available, from anti colic bottles and wide neck designs to glass, silicone, and plastic bottles… it's natural to wonder which choice is best for your baby. In this guide, we'll help you understand the different bottle and teat options so you can find a feeding setup that feels right for your baby and your family. How to Choose the Best Baby Bottle When comparing baby bottles, start by thinking about your baby's feeding needs rather than focusing on brands or features. Newborn? Look for slow flow teats and easy to clean bottles – you’ll likely be using up to 12 bottles a day in those very early stages! Breastfed or mixed feeding? Wide neck bottles and breast shaped teats can help support a natural latch. Experiencing wind or reflux? Anti-colic bottles will help reduce swallowed air. Need something practical for everyday use? Lightweight plastic bottles are often a great choice. Looking for a long term option? Glass bottles are durable and long lasting. Choosing the Right Bottle MaterialDifferent bottle materials offer different benefits, but there isn't a single right choice. Bottle Type Best For Things to Know Plastic Everyday use Lightweight and practical Glass Durability Easy to clean but heavier Silicone Mixed feeding Soft and flexible 💛 Dimples Tip: Something we often tell parents is not to overthink the bottle material too much. Most babies will adapt well to different bottle types, so it's often more about what works best for your family and feeding routine. Bottle Shapes at a Glance Standard Bottles - A simple, reliable option that works well for most babies. Wide-Neck Bottles - Easier to fill and clean, and often preferred by families combining breast and bottle feeding. Anti-Colic Bottles - Designed to reduce the amount of air swallowed during feeding. 💛 Something we get asked a lot at Dimples: "Are anti colic bottles really worth it?" For babies who experience wind, gas, or reflux, or even for as a preventative method – yes! We know many parents who have found they make feeding more comfortable and reduce post feed fussiness. Explore our bottle range here Explore our Infant and Toddler Formula range here Best Bottles for Breastfed Babies & Mixed Feeding Another common question we hear at Dimples is: "What's the best bottle for a breastfed baby?" While every baby is different, wide-neck bottles with soft silicone teats are often a great place to start. When introducing a bottle to a breastfed baby, look for: Wide teats that encourage a natural latch Slow flow teats that mimic breastfeeding Soft silicone teats with a familiar feel Bottles designed to support mixed feeding Many parents also find paced bottle feeding helpful, as it encourages babies to feed at a rhythm that's closer to breastfeeding. You can learn more about paced bottle feeding here. Shop bottles suitable for mixed feeding Choosing the right teat flow can make feeding feel calmer and more comfortable for your baby. For newborns and younger babies, a slow flow teat is usually the best place to start. This helps milk flow gently and steadily, giving your baby time to feed at their own pace. As your baby grows and becomes more confident with bottle feeding, they may be ready for a medium or faster flow teat. Age guides can be helpful, but your baby's feeding cues are often the best sign. The flow may be too fast if your baby is coughing, spluttering, gulping milk, leaking milk from their mouth, or becoming unsettled during feeds. The flow may be too slow if your baby seems frustrated, takes a very long time to finish a bottle, or often falls asleep before finishing their feed. 💛 Another common questions we are asked: "When should I move up a teat size?" The answer is usually based on your baby's feeding cues rather than just their age alone. Shop our teat range here Cleaning, Sterilising & Bottle Care Keeping bottles and teats clean is a very important part of bottle feeding. Wash bottles and teats thoroughly, replace worn teats when needed, and sterilise bottles up until your baby is approximately 12 months old. A few simple essentials can make life easier: Bottle sterilisers Bottle warmers Bottle brushes Drying racks Feeding bibs Shop bottle cleaning and sterilising essentials here Frequently Asked Questions about Bottle Feeding What bottles are best for newborns? Most newborns do well with bottles fitted with slow flow teats. Anti-colic designs can also be helpful for babies prone to wind or reflux. What bottle is best for a breastfed baby? Wide-neck bottles with soft silicone teats are often a great option for supporting mixed feeding and encouraging a natural latch. Are anti-colic bottles worth it? For babies who swallow excess air while feeding, anti-colic bottles may help reduce wind, gas, and feeding discomfort. How do I know if teat flow is too fast? Look for coughing, spluttering, milk leaking from the mouth, or your baby struggling to keep up with the flow. Glass vs plastic baby bottles: which is better? Both are excellent options. Plastic bottles are lightweight and practical, while glass bottles are durable, easy to clean, and resistant to staining. Finding the Right Feeding Fit for Your Family Every baby is different, and finding the best baby bottle often involves a little trial and error. Trust your baby's cues, be kind to yourself, and remember that there's no single "right" choice. What matters most is finding a feeding setup that feels comfortable for both you and your baby. 💛 A final note from our team: We've helped hundreds of New Zealand families navigate bottle feeding over the years, and if there's one thing we've learned, it's that every feeding journey looks a little different. Learn moreKeeping Winter Bugs Away from your Baby
How to Keep Your Baby Warm and Well This Winter Winter with a baby can bring a few extra worries, especially when they are brand new. Along with keeping your little one warm and comfortable, there are the inevitable winter sniffles, coughs and bugs to navigate. Babies have very small nasal passages, so even a little congestion can make feeding and sleeping more difficult. While it is impossible to avoid every winter cold, there are a few simple ways to help protect your babe and keep them comfortable when the sniffles arrive. Dress your baby in warm, breathable layers Keeping your baby warm does not prevent a cold, but it does help them stay comfortable during chilly winter days. A helpful guide is to dress your baby in one more layer than you are wearing. Choose light, breathable layers that are easy to add or remove as the temperature changes. Merino wool is a wonderful choice for winter baby clothing. It naturally helps regulate body temperature, keeping your baby warm while allowing excess heat and moisture to escape. Soft merino bodysuits, babygrows and sleepwear are ideal for layering without adding too much bulk. Create a safe and cosy sleep space For every sleep, place your baby on their back on a firm, flat mattress with their face and head uncovered. Keep pillows, toys and other loose items out of their sleep space. During winter, it is safer to dress your baby in suitable sleepwear or a baby sleeping bag than to add heavy or loose bedding. Avoid overheating the room and adjust your baby’s clothing when needed. Help keep winter germs away Good everyday hygiene can help reduce the spread of coughs, colds and other winter illnesses. Wash and dry your hands regularly, especially before feeding your baby, after changing nappies and when returning home. Encourage older siblings to wash their hands and cough or sneeze into their elbow. It can also help to regularly clean frequently handled toys and surfaces, and avoid close contact with people who are (or have just been) unwell. Breastmilk provides valuable nutrients and antibodies, but every family’s feeding journey is different. Whether your baby is breastfed or formula fed, continue offering their usual feeds regularly. When your baby has a blocked nose A blocked nose can make it harder for your baby to feed, settle and sleep comfortably. Saline drops suitable for babies can help loosen thick mucus. You can then use a baby nasal aspirator to gently remove it, following the product instructions carefully. This can be particularly helpful before a feed or sleep. A cool-mist humidifier may also help make a dry room feel more comfortable. Place it safely out of your baby’s reach, change the water regularly and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent mould or bacteria from building up. Keep an eye on their temperature If your baby feels unusually hot, cold or unwell, checking their temperature can help you understand how they are doing. The Oricom Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer provides a quick reading without disturbing your little one. Always follow the user guide carefully, as forehead thermometer readings can be affected by positioning and the surrounding environment. A fever is generally considered a temperature of 38°C or higher. If your baby is under three months old and has a fever, seek medical advice urgently. A gentle chest rub for older babies For babies over three months, the Nude Alchemist Chest Rub for Babies can be added to their comforting bedtime routine. Apply it only as directed and remember that chest rubs provide comfort rather than treating or curing a cold. This particular formula is suitable from three months but there are other types of rub on the market as well. Always check age recommendations, complete a patch test and stop using the product if irritation occurs. Baby Cold and Sniffles Comfort Checklist Keep these winter essentials together so they are easy to find when your baby needs a little extra care: A reliable baby thermometer Baby safe saline drops A gentle nasal aspirator A clean cool mist humidifier Chest rub suitable for your baby’s age Soft, breathable layers Hydration - Plenty of regular milk feeds and water if they are over 6 months Extra cuddles, comfort and rest When to seek medical help You know your baby best. Seek medical advice if they are becoming more unwell, feeding poorly, having fewer wet nappies, unusually sleepy or difficult to settle. Get urgent medical help if your baby: Is under three months old and has a temperature of 38°C or higher Is struggling to breathe, breathing unusually quickly or grunting Looks blue around the lips or mouth Is floppy, very pale or difficult to wake Is unable to feed because of breathing difficulties If you are unsure, contact your doctor, call Healthline on 0800 611 116, or call 111 in an emergency. You can also read Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s guidance on colds in babies and children. A Little Winter Preparation Goes a Long Way Winter bugs are an unavoidable part of childhood! Having a few trusted essentials ready can make those sniffly days feel much more manageable. With breathable merino layers, a cosy sleep space and gentle comfort close at hand, you can help your little one feel warm, secure and well cared for throughout winter. You’re doing great.

Learn moreToys for Every Age & Stage
Choosing Toys or Gifts They'll Love What might look like messy play or mindless rattling is actually serious business for your baby. From day one, they’re learning through movement, touch, sound, and – yes – smearing food on every available surface. Play is how your little one makes sense of the world, so choosing toys that match their stage of development can really help them thrive. Here’s a simple guide to what kinds of toys to look out for during each phase of your baby’s exciting journey. 0–6 Months: The First Explorer Your newborn may be tiny and still figuring out the basics, but their brain is already hard at work. Even in the early days, babies can recognise voices and slowly begin to track faces (though not quite in focus at first). At this stage, look for toys with high-contrast patterns and simple shapes – a mobile over the cot is ideal for visual stimulation and encouraging early motor skills as they start to reach out. A fun activity gym is amazing for development and early hand eye coordination as well. Suckling is another important reflex to support, so having safe teething toys can help build strength in their mouth muscles – which later supports chewing and speech. We stock a super fun range of teething toys at Dimples. Babies also love the sound of your voice, so don’t hesitate to chat away, sing, or start reading aloud. Soft crinkly activity books are a great addition as they are very visually interesting to your little one, as well as a high contrast board book. 6–12 Months: The Little Scientist As your baby gets stronger, tummy time becomes key for building neck and upper body strength. Use an engaging play mat to make tummy time fun and motivating. Around six months, proper teething often begins, so toys they can safely chew are your best friends – easing discomfort while supporting oral development. At this stage, babies are all about discovery – they’re working on sitting up, crawling, grasping, and even pulling themselves to stand. Toys that support these physical leaps are ideal. Look for soft balls to encourage rolling and crawling, stacking toys for building early coordination, and activity cubes or busy boards with things to twist, slide, and push. Toys that respond with sound or light when touched can also be hugely exciting (and educational), helping babies connect cause and effect. And don’t forget the classics – things that crinkle, rattle, or squeak are still crowd-pleasers and support sensory development beautifully. 12–18 Months: The Creative Genius You’ve made it through the first year – what a milestone! At this age, many little ones are eager to master walking. A sturdy walker toy can support their balance and leg strength as they wobble around with pride. Fine motor skills also start taking centre stage. Now that your little one is on the move and growing more curious by the day, toys that support exploration, movement, and problem-solving are ideal. Push-and-pull toys like the classic Buzzy Bee or a cute pull along toy are perfect for developing balance and coordination as they become more confident on their feet. Large building blocks or stacking rings help improve fine motor skills and spatial awareness. This is also a great age for toys that encourage interest in pretend play – think toy phones, baby dolls, animal figurines, or mini tea sets. Musical instruments like tambourines, shakers, or xylophones are not only fun but also help with rhythm and sensory processing. Chunky crayons are also great for encouraging scribbles – and those early masterpieces might earn a spot on your fridge. As their vocabulary starts to form and their understanding of language grows, this is the perfect time to keep those conversations flowing. Reading together, singing songs, and chatting about what you’re doing throughout the day helps build their language skills and connection to you. Even if they’re not saying much just yet, they’re absorbing it all – storing up words, rhythms, and tones to use later. 18 Months - 2 Years: The Big Personality Welcome to toddlerhood – where the big personality really comes through! At this stage, your child is becoming more independent, showing clear preferences, and beginning to express their likes and dislikes. You might notice them choosing to play solo more often, or forming strong attachments to certain toys, books, routines, or even characters from stories and shows. This is also when pretend play really starts to blossom. Role-playing everyday scenarios – like cooking dinner, feeding a doll, or making a pretend phone call – is not only adorable, it’s an important part of social and emotional development. A toddler-sized kitchen set is a fantastic toy at this age, encouraging imaginative storytelling and helping little ones mimic the world they see around them. One of these Kitchen Helpers let your toddler safely join you at the counter, fostering independence and fine motor skills. By involving them in simple kitchen tasks, you’re nurturing their creativity and boosting their confidence in a hands-on way. Beginner puzzles are also a great choice to foster problem solving skills – Particularly ones with familiar objects such as this zoo puzzle, or this vehicle puzzle. At this age, play becomes more purposeful – every stack, stir, and story is helping your little one make sense of the world and build skills for the future. 3+ Years: The Explorer Preschoolers see the world with fresh eyes – everything is fascinating! Toys at this age are more than entertainment; they support learning, spark imagination, and help your child make sense of their world. By three, many children are ready for smaller pieces, but it's still important to supervise, just incase. Preschoolers play hard – building, crashing, dragging, shaking, and repeating – and quality toys will last longer and often perform better. Children this age are also starting to enjoy more meaningful creative and open ended activities. Here are a few of our favourite picks for the bigger kids ages 3+ Washable Colouring in Tablecloth - Great for sole play or a group activity. Best of all it can be reused over and over again! Balance Bike Start off with the trike if your little one is new to riding, and then it transforms into a balance bike! Cash Register - Perfect for pretend grocery shops or café setups, this beautifully crafted toy helps children explore early math, communication, and social interaction Playdough - Little monkeys love squishing, rolling, and making lots of different fun objects Connetix - Inspire creativity with the countless ways these sets can be built Go at Their Pace Every child develops at their own rhythm. Some skip crawling and go straight to walking. Others might take their time with speech while still communicating effectively in their own way. Some might be into different things than their peers - and that's okay! It’s tempting to compare, but there’s a very wide range of normal. If you’re ever concerned, have a chat with your GP or child health nurse. You're doing an incredible job raising a one of a kind little person. And remember – the best toy of all is you. Your love, voice, and presence are what your baby cherishes most ❤️

Choosing the Right Highchair for Your Baby 🍽️ When it comes time to start solids, your baby deserves only the best. It might seem minor, but it plays a big role in supporting healthy hip development. Paediatricians note that having stable foot support helps babies build motor skills, which leads to better eating, improved concentration, and less fidgeting at mealtimes (win-win). At Dimples, we offer a carefully chosen range of highchairs that are beautifully designed and built with your baby’s comfort in mind.
