Keeping Winter Bugs Away from your Baby
Keeping your baby well and cosy this winter Winter can be a challenging time when you have a little one, especially if they’re brand new. 🐣 Alongside keeping baby warm and dry, you’re also up against colds, flu, and other winter bugs that seem to be everywhere. Because babies’ immune systems are still developing, they’re more vulnerable to infections. Their tiny nasal passages and lungs also mean illnesses like colds and flu can affect them more than adults. But don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to reduce their risk and help them recover quickly if they do catch something. Stay warm, stay comfy While “catching a chill” won’t cause a cold or flu, keeping your baby warm and dry helps their body focus on fighting off germs instead of battling the cold. Dress your baby in one extra layer than you’re wearing, and choose clothes that are easy to add or remove as they warm up or cool down. Keep your home temperature steady around 18 - 20°C for cosy comfort. Merino wool is a winter hero for babywear and bedding. Its natural temperature regulating properties keep babies warm without overheating, making it ideal for layering under pyjamas and sleepwear. Fuel their immune system Good nutrition is vital to support your baby’s developing immune system. Once they’ve started solids, offer a colourful variety of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Frozen produce can be just as nutritious as fresh, especially during winter when fresh foods may have been stored for long periods. Avoid refined sugars and processed foods, which can impair immunity. When possible, prepare baby’s food from scratch to keep nutrient levels high. While supplements aren’t usually necessary for babies, some parents choose to use vitamin drops - just make sure these are used as a boost to a healthy diet and given in the correct amounts. Keeping germs at bay Reducing exposure to germs is one of the best ways to keep your baby healthy during winter. Handwashing is the frontline defence. Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after being in public places, changing nappies, or before feeding your baby. Teach older siblings to wash their hands immediately after coming home, and encourage good hygiene habits like coughing or sneezing into their elbows instead of their hands. If your baby is old enough to explore, regularly clean their hands as well, since babies often put toys and fingers in their mouths. When out and about, keeping your baby’s pram covered can help shield them from strangers’ coughs and sneezes or accidental touching. Regularly clean toys and surfaces baby frequently touches at home to limit germs. Avoid close contact with anyone who is unwell, and try to limit your baby’s time in crowded places during peak cold and flu season. If you’re still breastfeeding, it’s especially important to keep germs away - breastmilk passes vital antibodies that help protect your baby from many illnesses. This natural immunity boost makes hygiene and reducing exposure even more crucial. Hydration is key Breastfeeding also helps keep your baby hydrated and supported through winter. Regardless of feeding method, ensure your baby drinks enough breastmilk, formula, or water (if old enough) to prevent dry nasal passages and reduce infection risk, especially if you’re using heaters or air conditioning, which can dry the air. When sniffles strike Even with your best efforts, babies can still catch colds. If your baby starts showing signs of a runny nose or congestion, gentle relief can make a big difference. Nasal decongesters designed specifically for infants safely clear blocked noses, making it easier for them to breathe and sleep. Using a few drops of saline beforehand can help loosen mucus for easier removal. A chest rub can be especially helpful for sleep. Raising the head of their cot slightly and running a humidifier in their room can soothe irritated airways. While some parents like using eucalyptus rubs or essential oils, it’s best to apply these to bedding or sleepwear rather than directly on baby’s skin to avoid irritation. The Big Day – Packing Your Bag for Birth The excitement of packing your maternity bag is such a beautiful moment – folding tiny clothes that will soon dress your little one, imagining the moment you’ll finally hold them in your arms. It’s a magical time, but we know it can also feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. It's hard to know what you'll really need! Here’s the good news: the place you’re giving birth is likely just a short distance away from home. Your partner or family will be able to bring anything you forget, so don’t stress about having everything packed perfectly. A really practical way to prepare is to pack two separate bags – one for labour and postpartum, and one for your baby. When things start moving quickly (as they often do), having your essentials for labour in one place makes it easy to grab and go. Your baby’s bag can stay tucked away until it’s needed later. It’s a simple way to stay calm, organised, and focused on welcoming your little one. 🥰 What to Pack in Your Go Bag This bag should contain everything you’ll want need for both the big day and your recovery afterwards. Keeping it all in one place makes it easier for you and your partner to grab what you need when the time comes. Here are our recommendations, these are not all essential but many women find all of these items have helped them feel cool, calm, and collected, and make their experience a bit more comfortable. For your labour and birth: Comfortable clothes for labour – whether that’s your favourite baggy t-shirt, bikini top, or nightie (or even nothing at all!) - wear what makes you feel at ease A pillow from home – comfort is key, and something familiar can help you relax Lip balm to keep your lips hydrated Hair ties or bands to keep your hair out of your face A drink bottle with a sipper top for easy hydration TENS machine or other birth aid if you if you plan to use one – we love Your Birth Weapon Music to create a soothing environment (you could create your own birth playlist!) A quick sugar hit, like jelly snakes or barley sugars, to give you energy when needed, and some high protein snacks for your and your partner like muesli bars, nuts or jerky. Electrolyte drinks are also a great way to help your body hydrate, and provide a bit of a boost. Mobile phone and charger, and a camera if you want to capture special moments For after your birth: Any regular medications you currently take Comfortable clothes and PJs for you to change into once you’ve delivered your little bundle of cuteness. And your dressing gown if you’re a dressing gown gal! Which swaddle or wrap is best for your baby? Choose well for better sleep Swaddling your newborn helps calm, relax and settle your baby, ready to sleep. A swaddled newborn will generally fall asleep more easily and sleep for longer. This is because newborns are still used to the warm, tight feel of the womb. Newborns also have a startle reflex – really big twitches of the hands and arms that can wake your baby. Swaddling gently snuggles your baby’s arms in to keep them snoozing peacefully. Choosing the right swaddle or wrap depends on your baby’s preferences and the time of year. Some swaddles may be one-size-fits-all, designed to use from newborn through to infant sleeping bag. Others fit a specific size, and you’ll need to change the size as your baby grows. For these wraps, it’s much safer to get one that fits your child now – not one that they’ll grow into. The extra fabric can get in the way of your child’s movement, and may also increase the risk of SIDS. Follow our guide to understand what’s right for your newborn. Which wrap is right for you? There are two main types of wraps: fitted wraps, and traditional swaddles. The right one will depend on your preferences, and what works best for your baby. Fitted wraps Fitted wraps make swaddling a newborn easier. They’re also more secure – very important if your baby is a wriggler! Dimples has two types of fitted wraps: Snuggle Wrap : The Dimples Snugglewrap is perfect for a newborn who loves to be cocooned with arms down. Its unique design means it can be used safely in the crib, pushchair or car seat, for babies up to six months old. The Snuggle Wrap comes in one size and will adapt to your baby as it grows. It allows for natural movement of the hips and arms, while still making your baby feel snug and comforted. This Sleep Pod comes in two sizes: newborn and small (3 – 6 months). It has a zip up the front that makes it super easy to put on. There’s also easy access via the double-ended zip for nighttime nappy changes. Traditional wraps Traditional wraps are large pieces of stretchy fabric. They are more versatile than fitted wraps, as they can also be used as shade cloth, feeding cover or blanket. They also grow with your baby, so you don’t need to buy more than one. However, they are more difficult to use – learning to swaddle takes time, and it can be difficult to get the perfect fit, especially on a wriggly baby at 2 am. Dimples have Extra-large wraps, in both merino and organic cotton . Cotton or merino? Both cotton and merino fabrics are suitable for sleeping swaddles. Both are breathable, helping babies to regulate their temperature. Synthetic fabrics can lead to your baby overheating and sweating. Merino wool can help naturally regulate your baby’s temperature, providing even warmth and wicking moisture away. This makes an excellent option year-round. During the hottest months you may prefer a cotton wrap. This can also be used in cooler weather over close-fitting wool pajamas. The perfect wrap, better sleep Finding the perfect wrap can make all the difference in those tricky early months. This may take some trial and error, as you learn about what works for you and your baby. If you’re confident using a traditional wrap, this will give you the most versatility. If you’re a relatively newcomer to swaddling, a fitted wrap might suit you better. If your baby will arrive in the heat of summer, make sure you have a few cotton options on hand. For other times of the year, merino will work well. Whatever you choose, nailing that perfectly wrapped baby burrito will make for an especially wonderful parenting moment – especially if your baby is asleep!
