Dimples has always been a proud New Zealand brand, with strong Kiwi values. Protecting the environment is one of them. Even as we’ve grown from a home business to a larger company, that commitment hasn’t changed. The clothing industry is notoriously hard on the environment – and on the people involved. It can cause incredible environmental and social damage worldwide: from cotton farms that suck up huge amounts of valuable water, to clothing factories using harsh chemicals and exploiting their workers; from the use of fossil fuels for shipping, to ‘fast fashion’ that ends up in landfills after a few wears. We work hard to minimise our impact on the environment by keeping our production in New Zealand, using local materials as much as possible, and avoiding the factory system altogether. It’s about protecting our world long term – and making adorable, high quality baby gear at the same time. Made here, sold here Dimples clothing is produced right here in New Zealand. This lets us avoid shipping product across the world using harmful fossil fuels – it’s one of the most important ways that we reduce our environmental impact. Making our clothes in New Zealand also means that we can control the quality of our product, and the working conditions of our sewers. We know that all our clothing is produced to an extremely high standard, by workers who are paid well and treated fairly. That’s incredibly valuable. Starting from scratch Where clothing is assembled isn’t the only factor when it comes to the environment. Sourcing the raw materials – merino wool and cotton , in our case – is also important. Our merino comes from a mix of New Zealand and Australian sheep, which means the raw materials don’t have to travel very far, and we can keep an eye on the quality. New Zealand’s climate isn’t suitable for large-scale cotton production, so we import only pure, organic-certified cotton to make sure the impact of cotton farming is minimal. Small scale production Dimples started out as a home-based business, and although we’ve grown, we haven’t changed all that much. We don’t have a huge factory producing our clothing – instead, our expert sewers work from their homes. It’s essentially a scaled-up version of the small home workshop where it all started. The classic Dimples bee and rose are still hand-stitched onto every garment. This system doesn’t just result in a better quality product, it also helps us avoid the environmental costs of factory production – we don’t use huge amounts of power to run machinery, or process our materials using harsh chemicals. Made to last The end result of our high-quality materials and high production values is hard-wearing, long-lasting clothing. Our customers find that our clothing lasts through wash after wash without fading, stretching or pilling. Many customers use our clothing for multiple children, then pass it on to friends or family. This is environmentally friendly in itself – the more your child or children can wear each garment, the less you’ll need to throw away. This reduces the need for production and reduces the amount of landfill. It’s all part of our ongoing commitment to our beautiful world. The Big Day – Packing Your Bag for Birth The excitement of packing your maternity bag is such a beautiful moment – folding tiny clothes that will soon dress your little one, imagining the moment you’ll finally hold them in your arms. It’s a magical time, but we know it can also feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. It's hard to know what you'll really need! Here’s the good news: the place you’re giving birth is likely just a short distance away from home. Your partner or family will be able to bring anything you forget, so don’t stress about having everything packed perfectly. A really practical way to prepare is to pack two separate bags – one for labour and postpartum, and one for your baby. When things start moving quickly (as they often do), having your essentials for labour in one place makes it easy to grab and go. Your baby’s bag can stay tucked away until it’s needed later. It’s a simple way to stay calm, organised, and focused on welcoming your little one. 🥰 What to Pack in Your Go Bag This bag should contain everything you’ll want need for both the big day and your recovery afterwards. Keeping it all in one place makes it easier for you and your partner to grab what you need when the time comes. Here are our recommendations, these are not all essential but many women find all of these items have helped them feel cool, calm, and collected, and make their experience a bit more comfortable. For your labour and birth: Comfortable clothes for labour – whether that’s your favourite baggy t-shirt, bikini top, or nightie (or even nothing at all!) - wear what makes you feel at ease A pillow from home – comfort is key, and something familiar can help you relax Lip balm to keep your lips hydrated Hair ties or bands to keep your hair out of your face A drink bottle with a sipper top for easy hydration TENS machine or other birth aid if you if you plan to use one – we love Your Birth Weapon Music to create a soothing environment (you could create your own birth playlist!) A quick sugar hit, like jelly snakes or barley sugars, to give you energy when needed, and some high protein snacks for your and your partner like muesli bars, nuts or jerky. Electrolyte drinks are also a great way to help your body hydrate, and provide a bit of a boost. Mobile phone and charger, and a camera if you want to capture special moments For after your birth: Any regular medications you currently take Comfortable clothes and PJs for you to change into once you’ve delivered your little bundle of cuteness. And your dressing gown if you’re a dressing gown gal! Toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, your hairbrush – whatever you use everyday Post Birth Care – This Pure Mama Spray is serious lifesaver to help ease any discomfort. Pair it with some postpartum undies and a soothing insert - this is the ultimate combo! A maternity bra – a maternity bra will help make things more comfortable when your milk comes in. Silverettes and Nipple Cream – The Silverettes will protect your nipples between feeding and pumping during the early days of breast feeding while your body is still getting used to the new normal. Here’s what you’ll want to pack: Clothes for baby - Warm onesies, bodysuits, pants, cardigans, socks, beanies, and booties. We’d recommend packing for two days, so three of each item should be perfect. Plus you can’t forget the special going home outfit! 📸 Our Dimples Merino range is perfect for newborns ❤️ Cotton or merino wraps for swaddling and a soft blanket for warmth White noise machine (the YogaSleep Hushh is a great option) to help settle baby Newborn nappies and Water Wipes - make sure you choose gentle products, with no perfume A stretchy wrap for carrying baby if they get unsettled Car seat – make sure it’s installed safely and ready to go home with baby (test it beforehand!) Dimples have a wide range of capsules and carseats available if you have not already purchased one. With everything packed and organised, you’ll feel more relaxed and ready for the big day. Remember, there’s no need to have everything perfect, and you absolutely don’t have to have everything on this list to have a wonderful, positive and beautiful experience! Our commitment to the environment How we look after your little one without harming the planet While caring for your precious bundle is often the first thing on your mind, it doesn’t need to have a negative impact on our environment. At Dimples, we partner with like-minded manufacturers and brands to offer ethical, sustainable products. We know that it’s possible to look after your babies without causing harm to the very planet they’ll inherit. Here’s what we do differently... Earth-friendlier fabrics Fabric choice is the starting point for us in doing our bit for the environment. Going for natural over synthetic is better for both your babe and the environment – synthetics are made from fossil fuels and cause lots of pollution. Nature does a pretty good job of providing us with amazing fabrics – merino wool from New Zealand sheep (which is both sustainable and renewable) and pure organic cotton that is free of chemicals. Our fabrics meet these standards: Fairtrade certified organic cotton and Australian Certified Organic – Our cotton is Fairtrade certified which shows farmworkers have decent working conditions and are paid fair prices for their produce. The organic certification means the farming process causes less stress on the environment. Without organic practices, toxic chemical residue ends up in local rivers, waterways and lakes, and harms the wildlife and people who live there. Oeko-Tex Standard 100 – this certification takes ‘certified organic’ one step further. To meet Oeko-Tex Standard 100, our fabric is tested and certified to be free from harmful levels of more than 100 substances known to be damaging to our health. We think this is pretty important for your babe’s delicate skin. Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) – this standard not only protects our adored merino producers but also the land they graze on. This is a globally recognised certification that covers sustainable grazing methods to protect our land. Responsible packaging While ruling out packaging completely is a difficult feat with stock coming in and out of stores and warehouses, we’re focussed on minimising what we use through recycling and reusing. Here are some of the things we do: Buy recycled boxes – this saves trees and the huge amounts of water taken to grow them (and make the boxes). Reuse boxes for stock – our boxes see multiple trips back and forth to shops before they end up in the recycling. Use tissue paper for packaging – we only wrap your precious purchases in recyclable tissue paper. Reuse plastic bags from suppliers – sometimes we can’t avoid plastic. If that’s the case, we make sure it gets reused rather than binned. Reducing environmental impacts with our manufacturing partner Wastewater is a huge problem internationally, with tonnes of toxic, dye-filled wastewater dumped into streams and waterways without being treated. There’s little regulation or policing of this, which has led to a lot of waterways in China and India becoming contaminated. Our textile partner ABMT is an innovative and environmentally-friendly manufacturer that prides itself in reducing the huge environmental impacts usually associated with making textiles. Its Melbourne facility has an on-site water treatment plant, so up to 85% of water in the factory is reused within the manufacturing process or through a third-party recycled water programme. ABMT also holds an ISO1401 Environmental Management System certification, which shows environmental impacts and sustainability are front and centre of its operations. Slow fashion for generations of babies Fast fashion sees a lot of textiles ending up in landfill. With little ones growing as quickly as they do, baby clothes too often join the growing piles of waste. That’s why we focus on timeless designs and fabrics that last, so your Dimple’s products will last through generations of babies. Rotating car seats – should you choose one?
Getting a wriggly toddler into a car seat shouldn’t feel like a workout. That’s why rotating car seats are quickly becoming a go-to for modern parents. In this blog, we explore how they work and why so many families are making the switch. From extended rear and front facing options to reducing back strain, we’ll help you decide whether a rotating car seat is the right choice for your growing family. Benefits of a Rotating Car Seat Easier access in and out of the car - The swivel function turns the seat towards the door, making it easier to get your child in and out of the car without awkward angles. With the seat facing you, it is easier to correctly position and tighten the harness, helping ensure your child is safely secured every time. Reduced strain on your back - Rotating the seat towards you helps minimise bending, twisting, and reaching, which can help prevent back and shoulder strain, especially with growing toddlers. This also helps parents (or grandparents) recovering from birth, injury, or surgery, or those with limited mobility, who often find rotating seats easier and more comfortable to use. Rear and front facing options - While your child is young, rear facing car seats are recommended for their safety. Though you want to keep them rear facing as long as possible (according to weight and height restrictions), you will eventually need to switch to forward facing, which is made incredibly easy with the swivel feature. You also have multiple angle options to recline the seat and can change all of these settings without having to re-install the entire seat. Things to Consider Before Buying Weight limits - Most (though not all) rotating car seats have a weight limit of 18kgs because of the isofix installation. On average, that’s around four years old, and while many parents are happy to switch to a booster seat after that, others just want one seat that goes all the way. If you’d prefer to buy a single seat with more longevity, a non-rotating option may suit you better. The Nuna Rava Next goes up to 29.4kgs (seven or eight years on average), and the Exec Next has a booster seat conversion, meaning that it lasts right from newborn up to 49.9kgs, around 12 years old! Space in your car - If you have multiple kids and multiple car seats in the car, having one that rotates might be a bit tricky. Rotating seats generally have a larger base, and the swivel motion itself can be blocked if there are other seats in the way. If you plan on having three seats side by side in the back row, swivelling is a no-go. If you have two seats, then a rotating seat might be a good option depending on how it fits into your car.
