What to put in your Hospital Go-Bag
The Big Day – Packing Your Bag for Birth The excitement of packing your maternity bag is such a beautiful moment – folding tiny clothes that will soon dress your little one, imagining the moment you’ll finally hold them in your arms. It’s a magical time, but we know it can also feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. It's hard to know what you'll really need! Here’s the good news: the place you’re giving birth is likely just a short distance away from home. Your partner or family will be able to bring anything you forget, so don’t stress about having everything packed perfectly. A really practical way to prepare is to pack two separate bags – one for labour and postpartum, and one for your baby. When things start moving quickly (as they often do), having your essentials for labour in one place makes it easy to grab and go. Your baby’s bag can stay tucked away until it’s needed later. It’s a simple way to stay calm, organised, and focused on welcoming your little one. 🥰 What to Pack in Your Go Bag This bag should contain everything you’ll want need for both the big day and your recovery afterwards. Keeping it all in one place makes it easier for you and your partner to grab what you need when the time comes. Here are our recommendations, these are not all essential but many women find all of these items have helped them feel cool, calm, and collected, and make their experience a bit more comfortable. We also have a downloadable list here. For your labour and birth: Comfortable clothes for labour – whether that’s your favourite baggy t-shirt, bikini top, or nightie (or even nothing at all!) - wear what makes you feel at ease A pillow from home – comfort is key, and something familiar can help you relax Lip balm to keep your lips hydrated Hair ties or bands to keep your hair out of your face A drink bottle with a sipper top for easy hydration TENS machine or other birth aid if you if you plan to use one – we love Your Birth Weapon Music to create a soothing environment (you could create your own birth playlist!) A quick sugar hit, like jelly snakes or barley sugars, to give you energy when needed, and some high protein snacks for your and your partner like muesli bars, nuts or jerky. Electrolyte drinks are also a great way to help your body hydrate, and provide a bit of a boost. Mobile phone and charger, and a camera if you want to capture special moments For after your birth: Any regular medications you currently take Comfortable clothes and PJs for you to change into once you’ve delivered your little bundle of cuteness. And your dressing gown if you’re a dressing gown gal! Toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, your hairbrush – whatever you use everyday Post Birth Care – This Pure Mama Spray is serious lifesaver to help ease any discomfort. Pair it with some postpartum undies and a soothing insert - this is the ultimate combo! A maternity bra – a maternity bra will help make things more comfortable when your milk comes in. Silverettes and Nipple Cream – The Silverettes will protect your nipples between feeding and pumping during the early days of breast feeding while your body is still getting used to the new normal. This Nipple cream by Pure Mama will help soothe discomfort. More snacks Bring a few of your favourite snacks - you'll be doing alot of sitting in those first few days and you'll need to keep your energy up. We also recommend lactation cookies – they are soo delicious and really help to support your milk come in. Two changes of clothes for your partner just in case What to Pack for Baby 🐣 Your baby’s bag should include everything they’ll need during their first few days with you. Here’s what you’ll want to pack: Clothes for baby - Warm onesies, bodysuits, pants, cardigans, socks, beanies, and booties. We’d recommend packing for two days, so three of each item should be perfect. Plus you can’t forget the special going home outfit! 📸 Our Dimples Merino range is perfect for newborns ❤️ Cotton or merino wraps for swaddling and a soft blanket for warmth White noise machine (the YogaSleep Hushh is a great option) to help settle baby Newborn nappies and Water Wipes - make sure you choose gentle products, with no perfume A stretchy wrap for carrying baby if they get unsettled Car seat – make sure it’s installed safely and ready to go home with baby (test it beforehand!) Which swaddle or wrap is best for your baby? Choose well for better sleep Swaddling your newborn helps calm, relax and settle your baby, ready to sleep. A swaddled newborn will generally fall asleep more easily and sleep for longer. This is because newborns are still used to the warm, tight feel of the womb. Newborns also have a startle reflex – really big twitches of the hands and arms that can wake your baby. Swaddling gently snuggles your baby’s arms in to keep them snoozing peacefully. Choosing the right swaddle or wrap depends on your baby’s preferences and the time of year. Some swaddles may be one-size-fits-all, designed to use from newborn through to infant sleeping bag. Others fit a specific size, and you’ll need to change the size as your baby grows. For these wraps, it’s much safer to get one that fits your child now – not one that they’ll grow into. The extra fabric can get in the way of your child’s movement, and may also increase the risk of SIDS. Follow our guide to understand what’s right for your newborn. Which wrap is right for you? There are two main types of wraps: fitted wraps, and traditional swaddles. The right one will depend on your preferences, and what works best for your baby. Fitted wraps Fitted wraps make swaddling a newborn easier. They’re also more secure – very important if your baby is a wriggler! Dimples has two types of fitted wraps: Snuggle Wrap : The Dimples Snugglewrap is perfect for a newborn who loves to be cocooned with arms down. Its unique design means it can be used safely in the crib, pushchair or car seat, for babies up to six months old. The Snuggle Wrap comes in one size and will adapt to your baby as it grows. Sleep Pod : The Sleep Pod is designed for babies who prefer to sleep with their arms up, or those who like self-soothing by sucking on a hand or fist while sleeping. It allows for natural movement of the hips and arms, while still making your baby feel snug and comforted. This Sleep Pod comes in two sizes: newborn and small (3 – 6 months). It has a zip up the front that makes it super easy to put on. There’s also easy access via the double-ended zip for nighttime nappy changes. Traditional wraps Traditional wraps are large pieces of stretchy fabric. They are more versatile than fitted wraps, as they can also be used as shade cloth, feeding cover or blanket. They also grow with your baby, so you don’t need to buy more than one. However, they are more difficult to use – learning to swaddle takes time, and it can be difficult to get the perfect fit, especially on a wriggly baby at 2 am. Dimples have Extra-large wraps, in both merino and organic cotton . Cotton or merino? Both cotton and merino fabrics are suitable for sleeping swaddles. Both are breathable, helping babies to regulate their temperature. Synthetic fabrics can lead to your baby overheating and sweating. Merino wool can help naturally regulate your baby’s temperature, providing even warmth and wicking moisture away. This makes an excellent option year-round. During the hottest months you may prefer a cotton wrap. This can also be used in cooler weather over close-fitting wool pajamas. The perfect wrap, better sleep Finding the perfect wrap can make all the difference in those tricky early months. This may take some trial and error, as you learn about what works for you and your baby. If you’re confident using a traditional wrap, this will give you the most versatility. If you’re a relatively newcomer to swaddling, a fitted wrap might suit you better. If your baby will arrive in the heat of summer, make sure you have a few cotton options on hand. For other times of the year, merino will work well. Whatever you choose, nailing that perfectly wrapped baby burrito will make for an especially wonderful parenting moment – especially if your baby is asleep!
Learn moreHow to Dress your baby for Sleep
Dressing Your Baby for Sleep – A Seasonal Guide Knowing how to dress your baby at bedtime can feel like a bit of a guessing game – especially when the seasons start to change. Should you add another layer? Is the room too cool? Are their hands meant to be that cold? To help take the guesswork out, we’ve put together a simple guide to dressing your little one for sleep using our Dimples sleeping bags and sleepwalkers, without any additional blankets. A Gentle Reminder Every baby is different, so this guide is just that – a guide. The best way to check if your baby is at a comfortable temperature is by feeling the back of their neck. It should feel warm, not hot or sweaty. Hands and feet can feel cooler and aren't always a reliable indicator. Baby’s body temperature naturally dips during the early morning hours, so if your little one is waking more often than usual, it might be worth checking if they’re feeling a bit chilly. And remember – when it comes to sleep, it’s safer for babies to be slightly cool rather than too warm. Choosing the Right Layers When dressing your baby, natural fibres like Merino wool or cotton are best. These breathable fabrics help regulate temperature and keep your baby comfortable through the night. Merino in particular is a year-round superstar – its clever fibres trap warm air on cooler nights and allow heat to escape on warmer ones, making it ideal for all seasons. At Dimples, all of our garments are designed especially for keeping little ones cosy and safe. We recommend having at least two sleeping bags or sleepwalkers on hand for each season, so you’re always prepared for the inevitable midnight messes. Ideal Room Temperature The ideal temperature for a baby’s room is between 16–20°C. If you’re using a heater or heat pump, setting the thermostat to 18°C will help maintain a steady climate through the night without overheating. Monitoring the Room Many baby monitors display room temperature, which can be a helpful reference.Alternatively, something like the Shnuggle Moon Nightlight can be used to keep an eye on the room temperature. It uses a handy colour display to show whether the room is sitting within the ideal range. Signs Your Baby May Be Too Warm Waking more frequently than usual Sweaty back or neck Damp hair Shallow or rapid breathing If you notice these signs, try removing a layer or adjusting the room temperature. A cool, damp cloth on the back of their neck can help if they’re feeling very warm – and always check for fever if you’re concerned. Signs Your Baby May Be Too Cold Restless sleep or unusual movement around the cot Rolling onto their stomach Catnapping during the day Waking around 5am If any of these sound familiar, consider adding a layer, using a warmer sleeping bag, or gently warming the room. Dressing your baby for sleep doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few key pieces and a little trial and error, you’ll find the sweet spot that keeps them cosy and safe – all night long 😴 Explore our full sleepwear range to find breathable, natural fibre options for every season. And if you’re ever unsure, we’re here to help.

Baby Swimming Lessons: Building Water Confidence from an Early Age Living in New Zealand means water is never far away! We've got beaches, we've got lakes and we've got rivers, not to mention our swimming pools and backyard water play. Learning how to feel confident and safe around water is an important life skill for our Kiwi kids. Introducing your little one to the water from an early age can be a lovely experience for the whole family. Swimming lessons can support coordination, movement and confidence, while also giving parents and caregivers a special opportunity to have fun, connect and learn together. Most importantly, early positive experiences around water can help lay the foundations for lifelong water safety. Water Safety New Zealand says drowning remains a leading cause of death for New Zealand children aged under five, making active supervision and age appropriate water skills incredibly important. Start with water confidence Your baby's first introduction to water doesn't need to happen at a swimming pool. Bath time is a great place to start. Allow your baby to enjoy splashing, kicking and gradually becoming familiar with water around their face and body. As they become more comfortable, trips to the local pool can introduce them to a completely different environment with new sounds, sensations and movements plus a whole lot of fun! The aim at this stage isn't to turn your baby into a swimmer. It's simply about helping them feel happy and secure around water. When can babies start swimming lessons? There isn't one set age that suits every baby or every swimming programme. Some specialist swim schools offer parent and baby classes from around three months, while others begin from six months. The best option is to check the starting age and requirements of your chosen swim school. Finding swimming lessons in New Zealand If you're looking for somewhere to start, there are plenty of great options. Dean Greenwood Swim School has several Auckland locations and offers programmes ranging from babies through to adults. Hilton Brown Swimming offers lessons for babies, children, teenagers and adults across locations in Auckland, Waikato, Hawke's Bay and Manawatū. Their infant programme focuses on water confidence, movement, safety awareness and introducing skills such as floating. Many local leisure centres and community swimming pools also offer learn-to-swim programmes for babies, preschoolers, school aged children and even adults, so it's totally worth checking what is available close to home. What happens at baby swimming lessons? Baby swimming lessons are usually much more about water familiarisation and confidence than traditional swimming. A parent or caregiver will generally get into the pool too, helping baby feel secure while the instructor introduces activities through play, songs and movement. Depending on your baby's age and the programme, lessons may gradually introduce skills such as: Becoming comfortable with water around the face and head Kicking and moving through the water Floating and rolling Breath control and gentle submersion Moving towards or returning to a safe position Learning to feel calm and confident in the pool It's also valuable learning for parents. You'll become more confident handling your baby in the water and learn ways to continue practising positive water experiences together. And remember - swimming lessons build skills and confidence, but they never replace active adult supervision around water. Tips for making swimming lessons easier Give yourself plenty of time Getting yourself and a baby changed can sometimes take longer than the swimming lesson itself! Arrive early enough that you don't need to rush. Family changing rooms are especially helpful, and if your pool allows strollers inside, having somewhere safe for baby to sit while you get changed can make things much easier. Pack for afterwards Swimming can be tiring, particularly for little ones. Have everything ready for a feed or snack afterwards depending on your baby's age. Keep them warm Moving from a warm swimming pool into a cooler changing room or outside air can feel like a big temperature change. Have a cosy towel and dry clothing ready so you can get your little one comfortable quickly. Bring another pair of hands If you're taking more than one child to lessons, another adult can make changing, feeding and getting everyone safely to and from the pool considerably easier. It can totally be done with one caregiver if you're game... but four hands are easier than two. Don't worry if every lesson isn't perfect Some days your baby might love the pool. Other days they may be tired, hungry or simply not interested. That's completely normal. Building water confidence is a gradual process, so keep the experience positive rather than trying to push through when they've had enough. What to pack for baby swimming lessons A little preparation makes getting in and out of the pool much easier. Baby swimwear Start with comfortable baby swimwear and swimming essentials suitable for your little one's age and the type of swimming you'll be doing. Our new Baby Swimwear Collection brings together the swim essentials you need for trips to the pool, beach and summer days by the water. Shop our full range of Baby Swim Essentials here Swim nappies Most pools require babies who aren't toilet trained to wear an appropriate swim nappy, so check your swim school's requirements before your first lesson. A warm towel A soft towel or hooded towel is ideal for wrapping baby up as soon as they leave the water. A change mat Pool changing rooms aren't always the easiest place to change a baby, so having your own change mat can be incredibly useful. The Purely Baby Disposable Change Mats are particularly handy for swimming lessons because you can create a clean changing surface and simply dispose of the mat afterwards. Don't forget Pack a few extra essentials too: Dry clothes Spare nappies Wipes A wet bag or waterproof bag for wet swimwear Milk, a bottle or snacks depending on baby's age Your own swimwear and towel - surprisingly easy to forget! Water safety always comes first Swimming lessons are valuable, but no swimming lesson or floatation device can replace close adult supervision. Water Safety New Zealand recommends keeping babies and young children within arm's reach whenever they're in or around water. This applies everywhere - the swimming pool, beach, bath, paddling pool, lake or river. Stay focused on your child rather than relying on lifeguards, older siblings or floatation toys to supervise them. It's also important to look for potential water hazards around your own home. In New Zealand, residential pools that can hold water to a depth of 400 mm or more are subject to requirements for physical barriers designed to prevent unsupervised access by children under five. Enjoy the water together Learning to swim is a journey, and it begins long before your child is swimming independently. Positive bath times, trips to the pool and regular swimming lessons can all help your little one develop confidence and respect for the water while creating plenty of special memories along the way. Keep it fun, follow their pace and, above all, stay close whenever water is around.
