Protecting your baby from the cold this Winter
How to Dress Your Newborn in Winter When winter sets in, keeping your newborn snug and comfortable becomes a top priority. Dressing baby in natural, breathable layers helps to regulate their temperature and reduce the risk of overheating or getting too cold. At the heart of this is Merino wool – a super-soft, temperature-regulating fibre that’s perfect for delicate skin. Merino is the ideal base for your baby’s winter wardrobe. It works to insulate when it’s cold and cools when it’s warm, keeping baby cosy without the need for bulky layers. At the same time, organic cotton can be used alongside Merino for gentle layering or in warmer indoor settings, giving you flexibility as the temperature shifts. Why Merino is the Best Choice for Winter Unlike synthetic fibres, Merino is breathable, moisture-wicking, and ultra-soft, making it an excellent next-to-skin layer. It naturally helps regulate body temperature, which is essential in those early weeks when your baby can’t do it themselves. Cotton is also a trusted option, especially for sensitive skin. While it doesn’t insulate quite like Merino, it’s great for layering over Merino or wearing in warmer rooms or during nap times when baby doesn’t need as much warmth. What to Dress Baby In During the Day At Home When indoors, comfort is key. A Merino bodysuit or baby grow offers the right amount of warmth without overheating. For mild days or heated rooms, you might choose a cotton bodysuit as the base, layering a Merino cardigan or leggings on top. Combining the two materials gives you the best of both worlds – Merino for temperature regulation, cotton for softness and breathability. Heading Out When you're on the go, think in layers. Start with a Merino base layer, followed by a cotton or Merino baby grow. Add mittens, a beanie, and a warm blanket in the pram or carrier. A simple rule: dress baby in one more layer than you’re wearing. Merino accessories like socks and hats are especially good for keeping warmth in, as babies lose a lot of heat through their head and feet. Dressing Baby for the Car For car rides, avoid bulky outerwear that interferes with the car seat harness. Dress baby in Merino and/or cotton layers, and use a blanket over the harness if needed. Merino’s warmth means you don’t need excessive layers, making it ideal for safe travel. How to Dress Your Baby for Sleep The ideal room temperature for baby’s sleep is between 16°C and 20°C. Use breathable Merino sleepwear and a Dimples Sleeping Bag suited to the room’s temperature (based on TOG rating) to help keep your baby warm and safe without overheating. Sleepwear suggestions: 16°C – Duvet Lined Sleeping Bag (TOG 2–3) over a Merino baby grow, cotton or Merino bodysuit, and socks. 18°C – Merino Lined Sleeping Bag (TOG 1.5–2.5) with a cotton bodysuit and Merino baby grow. 20°C – Summer Sleeping Bag (TOG 1–2) over a lightweight cotton or Merino bodysuit. Using a cotton bodysuit underneath Merino layers is a great option if your baby tends to run warm, or if your home is well heated. Why Layering Matters Layering natural fibres gives you the flexibility to adjust to your baby’s needs throughout the day. Merino next to the skin helps regulate their temperature, while cotton adds comfort and light coverage. If you’re unsure what your baby needs, check the back of their neck – warm (but not sweaty) means they’re just right. Adjust layers as needed. How to Care for Your Baby with a Cold 🤧🍼 A common cold is a viral infection – rarely serious, but often upsetting for both baby and parent. These colds can last from one to two weeks and are caused by a variety of viruses. While babies are born with some immunity, their immune systems take time to mature, making them more vulnerable in the early months. The best thing you can do is ease their symptoms and keep them as comfortable as possible while their body does the hard work. And remember – catching a cold helps strengthen their immunity over time. Common Cold Symptoms in Babies: What to Look For Symptoms of a cold usually appear about three days after exposure to the virus. You might notice: A stuffy or runny nose (often clear at first, then yellow or green) Sneezing A cough Fussiness or irritability Reduced appetite Trouble sleeping Mild fever General fatigue It’s always a good idea to check in with your GP, especially if your baby is under three months old or if you’re unsure about any symptoms. When your baby is unwell, offer plenty of extra love and cuddles 🤱🏼 Let them sleep when they need to, even if it's outside of their usual routine – rest is just as important as remedies when it comes to helping them heal. Natural Remedies to Help Relieve Baby’s Cold Because a cold is caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t help – but there are plenty of gentle remedies that can. If baby has a blocked or stuffy nose, saline drops can loosen mucus and make breathing easier. You should be able to get this at a good chemist. Pair this with a nasal aspirator to help clear their nose. At Dimples, we stock two great options: Oricom Rechargeable Nasal Aspirator – gentle, quiet, and super easy to use. It’s a popular choice for parents wanting something fuss-free and hygienic. NUK Nasal Decongester – simple and effective, designed to gently suction mucus without irritation. Best Humidifier for Babies with Congestion The Crane 3-in-1 Cool Mist Humidifier with Aroma Diffuser & Sleep Support Light can be such a help when your little one isn't feeling their best. The cool mist adds moisture to the air, helping to soothe stuffy noses, dry coughs, and delicate skin - making it a little easier for baby to rest and breathe. You can also add a few drops of baby-safe essential oils to the aroma diffuser for a comforting, calming atmosphere. And during those quiet overnight cuddles or feeds, the soft glow of the sleep light offers just the right amount of warmth and reassurance💛 The Best Chest Rub for Babies with a Cold 🌿 For natural relief, The Nude Alchemist Baby Chest Rub is a gentle balm made in New Zealand with certified organic ingredients. It can be applied to baby’s chest, back, or feet to help clear airways and promote a more restful sleep. A comforting must-have for cold season. When to See a Doctor About Your Baby’s Cold If your baby is under three months old and showing signs of a cold, always check in with your doctor. For older babies, trust your instincts – if symptoms worsen or you’re concerned, a quick visit can help rule out anything more serious and give you peace of mind.
Learn moreKeeping Winter Bugs Away from your Baby
How to Keep Your Baby Warm and Well This Winter Winter with a baby can bring a few extra worries, especially when they are brand new. Along with keeping your little one warm and comfortable, there are the inevitable winter sniffles, coughs and bugs to navigate. Babies have very small nasal passages, so even a little congestion can make feeding and sleeping more difficult. While it is impossible to avoid every winter cold, there are a few simple ways to help protect your babe and keep them comfortable when the sniffles arrive. Dress your baby in warm, breathable layers Keeping your baby warm does not prevent a cold, but it does help them stay comfortable during chilly winter days. A helpful guide is to dress your baby in one more layer than you are wearing. Choose light, breathable layers that are easy to add or remove as the temperature changes. Merino wool is a wonderful choice for winter baby clothing. It naturally helps regulate body temperature, keeping your baby warm while allowing excess heat and moisture to escape. Soft merino bodysuits, babygrows and sleepwear are ideal for layering without adding too much bulk. Create a safe and cosy sleep space For every sleep, place your baby on their back on a firm, flat mattress with their face and head uncovered. Keep pillows, toys and other loose items out of their sleep space. During winter, it is safer to dress your baby in suitable sleepwear or a baby sleeping bag than to add heavy or loose bedding. Avoid overheating the room and adjust your baby’s clothing when needed. Help keep winter germs away Good everyday hygiene can help reduce the spread of coughs, colds and other winter illnesses. Wash and dry your hands regularly, especially before feeding your baby, after changing nappies and when returning home. Encourage older siblings to wash their hands and cough or sneeze into their elbow. It can also help to regularly clean frequently handled toys and surfaces, and avoid close contact with people who are (or have just been) unwell. Breastmilk provides valuable nutrients and antibodies, but every family’s feeding journey is different. Whether your baby is breastfed or formula fed, continue offering their usual feeds regularly. When your baby has a blocked nose A blocked nose can make it harder for your baby to feed, settle and sleep comfortably. Saline drops suitable for babies can help loosen thick mucus. You can then use a baby nasal aspirator to gently remove it, following the product instructions carefully. This can be particularly helpful before a feed or sleep. A cool-mist humidifier may also help make a dry room feel more comfortable. Place it safely out of your baby’s reach, change the water regularly and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent mould or bacteria from building up. Keep an eye on their temperature If your baby feels unusually hot, cold or unwell, checking their temperature can help you understand how they are doing. The Oricom Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer provides a quick reading without disturbing your little one. Always follow the user guide carefully, as forehead thermometer readings can be affected by positioning and the surrounding environment. A fever is generally considered a temperature of 38°C or higher. If your baby is under three months old and has a fever, seek medical advice urgently. A gentle chest rub for older babies For babies over three months, the Nude Alchemist Chest Rub for Babies can be added to their comforting bedtime routine. Apply it only as directed and remember that chest rubs provide comfort rather than treating or curing a cold. This particular formula is suitable from three months but there are other types of rub on the market as well. Always check age recommendations, complete a patch test and stop using the product if irritation occurs. Baby Cold and Sniffles Comfort Checklist Keep these winter essentials together so they are easy to find when your baby needs a little extra care: A reliable baby thermometer Baby safe saline drops A gentle nasal aspirator A clean cool mist humidifier Chest rub suitable for your baby’s age Soft, breathable layers Hydration - Plenty of regular milk feeds and water if they are over 6 months Extra cuddles, comfort and rest When to seek medical help You know your baby best. Capsule Car Seats Best for: Newborns to approx. 12 months (up to 13kg depending on the brand)What they are: Rear-facing, portable infant car seats that easily lift in or out of the car. Most of the capsules we sell clip onto a base (sold separately) that stays installed in your car. Others have a baseless install either by Isofix or car seatbelt. Why parents love them: If you choose a capsule that's compatible with your stroller, you can transfer your sleeping baby for car to stroller without waking them They're easy to carry with a handle Most work with a base that stays in the car - simple click and go. Things to consider: You’ll likely only use it for the first year. Weight matters – some are much easier to carry than others. Great options to compare: Nuna Pipa Next – lightweight (only 2.8kg) and super portable. Nuna Arra Flex – features three recline positions - including a near-flat 157° recline. Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 Pro – ergonomic recline, 360° base for easy loading. Nuna Pipa Urbn – ideal for swapping between cars or rideshares, it has built-in Isofix, no base required. Nuna Cari Next – this one is in a category all of its own - both a carrycot and car seat. The Cari has a three-point harness and connects to the Nuna Next Base in the car. Booster Seats Best for: 4+ years (or as per height and weight guidelines)What they are: Forward-facing seats that position the vehicle seatbelt properly across your child. Britax Skyline – affordable, comfortable, and lightweight. Axkid Up – has a patented raisable seat to elevate your child to better align with the vehicle seat belt Other Key Considerations When Choosing a Car Seat Car fit: Not all seats fit all vehicles – check for compatibility, especially if fitting multiple seats. Ease of use: Consider rotating seats if you struggle with lifting your child in and out. Installation method: Isofix is quicker and easier, but seatbelt installs offer flexibility for older vehicles or travel. However Isofix does have lower weight restrictions (generally around 18kgs). If a seat allows for both Isofix and seatbelt installation it can pay to opt for Vehicle Seat Belt installation as it eliminates having to switch installation method once weight limits are reached. Longevity: Weigh up whether you want a dedicated seat for each stage or one that adapts as your child grows. Need Help Choosing?
