The importance of regulating your baby’s temperature

When you become a parent to a newborn baby it is important to always keep an eye out for the baby’s temperature. When an adult becomes too hot, they will sweat to cool themselves down, and when they become too cold their bodies will shiver to help warm it up.  Newborns do not have the ability to regulate their own temperature, therefore it is up to the baby’s carer to check on them and make sure they are not too hot or too cold.

How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold?

The normal temperature for a newborn baby should vary between 36oC and 37.5oC. When baby is sitting at the right temperature, they should feel warm at the touch and look nice and pink. When your baby becomes irritable and redder in the face this might be an indication that baby has become too hot. To check simply feel baby’s tummy and back. If their skin feels hot and sweaty to the touch this is a sign they need to be cooled down. A quick method to cool down your baby is taking off a layer or two of clothing. Signs your baby is too cold might be if their skin is paler than normal and they are not as active. Feel your baby’s tummy and back to see if their skin feels colder to the touch, if so, you will need to warm them up. One of the quickest methods to warm baby up is to undress them and use skin to skin contact. Warm heat from your own body should warm them up quickly and you will soon have a happy baby.

Easy ways to track baby’s temp

A simple and effective way to keep an eye on a baby’s temperature is by using a thermometer. The use of an Infrared thermometer allows you to take baby’s temperature safely and hygienically leaving them undisturbed because of the contactless feature. The Oricom Infrared Thermometer makes maintaining baby’s temperature simple by using a colour-coded visual indicator. The thermometer will remain green up to 37.3oC when baby is at a healthy temperature. If their temperature begins to increase the thermometer will light up as yellow between 37.4-37.9oC. The thermometer will change to red when baby’s temperature is above 38oC. Featuring a memory function Oricom makes life easy by tracking all of baby’s temperatures over a long period of time.
